The Va'a philosophy

MORE THAN ROWING. A CONNECTION THAT BINDS US.

In the same rhythm, we share the sea, overcome challenges, and discover the strength of rowing together.

“Maikai Hoa means “Good Friends.” In a *va‘a* (Hawaiian outrigger canoe), no one goes far alone. Every stroke requires synchronization, trust, and cooperation. When we paddle together, we leave individualism on the shore and discover the strength that comes from being part of something greater. Here, we share the sunrise, face the challenges of the sea, and celebrate every achievement. More than just a sport, we build friendships, cultivate respect for nature, and strengthen our team spirit. We are Maikai Hoa. We are good friends. We are one single canoe.”
Ohana
Welcome, unity and deep friendship in and out of the water.
Respect
We respect the sea, nature, the traditions of Va’a, and every person who shares in this journey.
COOPERATION
One team, one rhythm, and one goal. The strength of each rower contributes to the result for everyone.
MORE THAN ROWING. A CONNECTION THAT BINDS US.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

Each paddle, class and plan has its own price, always up to date on the activity page here on the site. On WhatsApp, just ask and we will send you the prices.

Where do we start from?

From our base in the Passagem neighbourhood, on the Itajuru Canal. The address and map are under "Where to find us".

What is the route?

We paddle along the Itajuru Canal, under the bridges and past Ilha do Anjo and Ilha do Japonês, in sheltered water, without going out to the open sea.

How long does it take?

It depends on the activity: the short paddle takes about 1 hour and classes and single paddles about 1h30. The length is shown for each time slot.

Do I need to know how to swim?

No. Everyone must wear a life jacket during the whole activity, and the club lends it to you.

Do I need paddling experience?

No. Before going into the water you get a briefing on the sand, and the team paddles with you in the canoe.

Do you go out when it rains?

Rain alone does not cancel the paddle; it is only cancelled when the weather is not safe. We also need at least 5 people for a paddle or class to happen. If the club cancels, students get a credit to make up the class, and visitors who cannot reschedule get a refund.

What if the sea is rough or windy?

Cabo Frio has one of the best spots for canoeing: we can paddle sheltered from the wind along the Itajuru Canal, without going out to the open sea.

Do I need a medical certificate?

No. When signing up you only declare that you are in good health. Pregnant women need a medical certificate allowing the activity.

What is the minimum age?

It depends on the activity: see the minimum age on each tour or class page. Children go with a parent or guardian.

What should I bring?

Clothes that can get wet, sunscreen, water, and arrive 15 minutes early for the briefing.
